Tahoe Tessie
Lake Tahoe, one of the deepest lakes in North America, has its own monster, nicknamed Tessie.
What was reported
Lake Tahoe, on the border of California and Nevada, is around 500 metres deep and famous for its clear blue water. Stories of a large creature living in its depths have circulated for decades, and it's nicknamed Tahoe Tessie.
Reports describe a dark, serpent-like animal or humps moving through the water, and tales say divers have seen huge shapes near the bottom.
Explanations offered
Suggestions include large lake trout, boat wakes and floating logs. The lake's cold water and great depth make legends easy to imagine. No evidence of an unknown animal has been found, and Tessie is a cheerful local mascot.
