The Mystery Airships of 1896
Years before the Wright brothers flew, Americans reported cigar-shaped airships with searchlights crossing the night sky.
What was reported
On the evening of 17 November 1896, crowds in Sacramento reported a bright light moving slowly over the city, and some said they heard voices or saw a cigar-shaped craft. Over the following weeks sightings spread across California, and in 1897 waves of reports swept the Midwest and Texas.
Newspapers printed claims from people who said they'd met the inventors, and stories of crashed airships, including the one at Aurora, Texas. No working airship of that kind existed at the time.
Explanations offered
Historians think the wave was fed by excitement about the coming age of flight, by bright planets such as Venus, by balloons and kites carrying lanterns, and by deliberate newspaper hoaxes. No airship or inventor was ever confirmed.
