The 'Gimbal' and 'GoFast' Videos
Navy fighter pilots filmed objects on their infrared cameras off the US East Coast, one seeming to rotate in mid-air. The Pentagon later confirmed the videos.
What was reported
In 2015, US Navy F/A-18 pilots from the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, training off the East Coast, recorded several videos on their targeting cameras. In one, nicknamed 'Gimbal', a dark object appears to rotate as it moves. In another, 'GoFast', a small object seems to race low over the ocean.
The videos were published in 2017, and in 2020 the Pentagon officially released them as showing 'unidentified aerial phenomena'. Pilots described seeing many such objects during that period.
Explanations offered
Analysts have argued that the 'rotation' in Gimbal is an effect of the camera's mount and lens glare, and that the GoFast object was moving much more slowly and higher up than it appears, possibly a balloon. The Navy has not given an official explanation.
