Altie, the Altamaha-ha
In the tidal creeks of coastal Georgia, people describe a long grey river creature with a snout and flippers.
What was reported
The Altamaha River flows into the Atlantic on the Georgia coast, through marshes and tidal creeks near the small town of Darien. Local people have long reported a large creature in its waters, said to be several metres long and grey, with a long snout, front flippers and a horizontal tail.
It's nicknamed 'Altie' and has become a local mascot.
Explanations offered
Suggestions include Atlantic sturgeon, which live in the river, grow large and leap from the water, as well as alligators, manatees and dolphins seen briefly. No specimen has been found.
