Wycliffe Well
A roadhouse on the Stuart Highway calls itself Australia's UFO capital, and visitors keep reporting lights over the desert.
What was reported
Wycliffe Well is a tiny stop on the Stuart Highway, south of Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. Travellers and locals have reported strange lights in the night sky there for years, and the roadhouse leans into it with alien statues, murals and walls of newspaper clippings.
Reports describe lights that hover, change colour or move in ways planes don't, over the flat, dark country around the settlement.
Explanations offered
Sceptics point out that the outback has almost no light pollution, so stars, planets, satellites, aircraft and distant headlights are unusually bright and easy to misjudge. The roadhouse's fame also draws people who are watching for something. No single sighting has been recorded well enough to study.
