The Westall Sighting
In the middle of a school morning, a silvery object came down behind the trees next to a Melbourne school field.
What was reported
On 6 April 1966, students and teachers at Westall High School and the nearby primary school reported a grey, disc-shaped object that came down into an open grassy area, then rose and flew off. Some said small aircraft circled it.
Many witnesses say they were told not to talk about it. The event was mostly forgotten until the 2000s, when former students began comparing memories.
Explanations offered
One suggestion is a balloon from a high-altitude research project being flown in Australia at the time. This has not been confirmed, and many witnesses dispute it.
