Ogopogo
In Okanagan Lake, people describe a long, dark creature with humps that ripples along the surface.
What was reported
The Syilx (Okanagan) people tell of N'ha-a-itk, a spirit of Okanagan Lake. Settlers in the 19th century began reporting a large serpent-like animal in the lake, later nicknamed Ogopogo.
Sightings continue, usually of a long, dark shape with several humps moving through the water. Several films have been taken, including a well-known one from 1968, but all are distant.
Explanations offered
Suggested explanations include floating logs, large sturgeon, otters or beavers swimming in a line, and boat wakes or waves. No body or bones have been found. Ogopogo is now the region's mascot.
