Monte Cristo Homestead
A grand Victorian homestead in rural New South Wales calls itself Australia's most haunted house.
What was reported
Monte Cristo is a Victorian mansion built in 1885 by the farmer Christopher Crawley on a hill above Junee, in New South Wales. It later fell into ruin, until new owners bought it in 1963 and began restoring it.
Stories tell of lights, voices, cold spots and figures, including the original lady of the house, said still to watch over it, and guests on ghost tours report feeling watched or uneasy in certain rooms.
Explanations offered
As with many old houses, the tales grew after it became an attraction offering ghost tours. There's no evidence beyond personal experiences, which can be shaped by expectation, darkness and the creaks and draughts of an old building.
