The Gosford Glyphs
In the bush north of Sydney are carved 'Egyptian hieroglyphs' said to tell of ancient sailors shipwrecked in Australia.
What was reported
In a sandstone gully at Kariong, near Gosford, about 300 carved symbols resembling Egyptian hieroglyphs were reported in the 1970s. Some enthusiasts claim they tell of Egyptian explorers shipwrecked in Australia thousands of years ago.
The site draws visitors and has featured in books and documentaries about lost history.
Explanations offered
Egyptologists say the carvings mix signs from different periods, contain mistakes and don't form a coherent text; they're thought to have been carved in the 20th century. There are genuine Aboriginal rock engravings in the area, and local Aboriginal people have asked visitors to respect it.
