The Migoi of Sakteng

CreaturesSakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, Trashigang, Bhutan · Told for generationsUnconfirmed

In eastern Bhutan, a wildlife sanctuary was set up partly to protect the home of the migoi, Bhutan's yeti.

What was reported

The Brokpa, a semi-nomadic yak-herding people of eastern Bhutan, tell of the migoi, the 'strong man': a large, hairy, ape-like creature that can make itself invisible and walk backwards to confuse anyone following its tracks.

When Bhutan created the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary in 2003, the migoi was included among the creatures whose habitat it protects. It is often described as the only reserve in the world that protects a yeti.

Explanations offered

No migoi has been found or photographed. Scientists suggest sightings may be of Himalayan black bears or other animals. The sanctuary also protects real and rare wildlife, including red pandas and snow leopards, and the legend has helped draw attention to it.
