The Army's Yeti Footprints
An Indian Army mountaineering team photographed giant footprints in the snow near Makalu and shared them as signs of the yeti.
What was reported
On 9 April 2019, an Indian Army mountaineering expedition near Makalu Base Camp in Nepal found a line of huge single footprints in the snow, measured at about 32 by 15 inches.
On 29 April, the Army shared photos on its official Twitter account, saying the team had seen 'mysterious footprints of mythical beast Yeti'. The post was reported around the world.
Explanations offered
Officials in Nepal and many scientists said the prints were probably left by a bear. Footprints in snow grow as the sun melts their edges, and an animal that steps into its own prints can leave a single line of large tracks. Supporters of the yeti say the Army team knows mountain snow well.
