Mamlambo

CreaturesMzintlava River, Eastern Cape, South Africa · 1997Legend

In 1997 villagers in South Africa's Eastern Cape said a giant river creature, part horse and part snake, was lurking in the Mzintlava River.

What was reported

Mamlambo is a river creature from Zulu and Xhosa folklore, often described as a huge serpent with a horse-like head and a body that glows green at night. In some stories it can bring wealth to those who make a bargain with it, at a price.

In 1997, people near Mount Ayliff in the Eastern Cape blamed it for several drownings in the Mzintlava River, and newspapers around the world picked up the story.

Explanations offered

Police and officials put the deaths down to drowning in a river swollen by rain, and suggested the 'creature' might be a crocodile or a large python, though neither usually lives there. Mamlambo remains a figure of folklore, and the 1997 sightings were never confirmed.
