Magnetic Hill
PlacesNear Leh, Ladakh, India · OngoingExplained
Leave your car in neutral on this stretch of road, and it appears to roll uphill.
What was reported
On the highway west of Leh, a signboard marks a short stretch where vehicles left in neutral seem to roll uphill by themselves. Local stories say the hill's magnetic pull is strong enough to affect cars, and even aircraft flying over.
It is now a stop on almost every tourist route through Ladakh.
Explanations offered
It's an optical illusion. The shape of the surrounding slopes hides the true horizon, so a gentle downhill slope looks like an uphill one. Similar 'gravity hills' exist around the world.
