The Light of Bragg Road
On a straight dirt road through the Big Thicket of Texas, a light is said to bob along at night like a lantern.
What was reported
Bragg Road is a straight dirt road of about 13 km near Saratoga, in the Big Thicket of south-east Texas, following the line of an old railway. For about a century people have reported a light that appears at night above the road, changing colour and brightness, and vanishing when approached.
Legends say it's the lantern of a railway worker killed in an accident, still searching the line, or of a Spanish conquistador guarding treasure.
Explanations offered
Suggested explanations include headlights from a highway in line with the road, marsh gas from the surrounding swamp, and reflections. Some say the light was reported before cars were common, which keeps the debate going.
