The Sounds Under Hasori
In a village near the site of a great earthquake, people began hearing rumbles from under the ground.
What was reported
From 6 September 2022, people in Hasori, a village in Latur district, reported loud rumbling sounds that seemed to come from beneath the ground. Some families slept outdoors.
The fear was understandable: Hasori is about 28 km from Killari, the centre of the 1993 Latur earthquake. But seismographs recorded no earthquake, and district officials called in experts from a university in Nanded and the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism.
Explanations offered
No clear cause was widely reported. Similar rumbling sounds elsewhere in the Deccan have been linked to tiny earthquakes too small to be felt, or to water moving through cracks in the basalt rock after heavy rain.
