The Clap at Golconda Fort
Clap your hands beneath the entrance dome of Golconda Fort, and the sound is said to carry all the way to the top of the hill.
What was reported
Golconda Fort, on the edge of Hyderabad, was the seat of the Qutb Shahi kings and famous for its diamond trade. Its main entrance, the Fateh Darwaza, has a dome above the gateway.
Guides tell visitors that a clap beneath the dome can be heard at the Bala Hisar, the pavilion at the very top of the fort, high above. The story says it was an early warning system, so guards at the gate could alert the king to danger.
Explanations offered
The dome focuses and reflects sound, and the fort's walls and quiet hillside help it carry. Visitors do hear claps from the gate far up the hill, though how clearly they reach the very top has probably grown in the telling. Whether it was designed as a signal is not recorded.
