The Brosno Dragon
In a deep lake west of Moscow, villagers speak of a dragon that rises from the water and sinks again.
What was reported
Lake Brosno is a deep lake in the forests of Tver Oblast, west of Moscow. Local legends going back centuries tell of a dragon-like creature living in it.
In the 1990s, new reports came in from fishermen and holidaymakers of a large animal with a long neck, of strange disturbances in the water, and of boats rocked by something below. Expeditions with sonar have searched the lake.
Explanations offered
Researchers who studied the lake suggest that gas, such as hydrogen sulphide from rotting matter on the deep lake bed, sometimes rises in large bubbles, churning the surface and making waves. Large fish, floating logs and swimming animals may explain other sightings.
