At night we heard a tram bell. The trams on that line had stopped running years before.
Our house faced the old tracks. Some nights the double ring of a tram bell came down the street, then the slow sound of wheels that faded out at the corner.
The old people in the lane said it happened every year in the first week of the rains. As children we sat at the window and waited. We never saw anything.
