At two in the morning my mother called my name from under the window. She was in Lucknow that night.
My hostel room was on the first floor. Someone below the window called me by the pet name only my mother uses, stretched out the way only she says it.
I opened the window. There was nobody, just a wet road and a flickering streetlight. In the morning I phoned her. She had been asleep, and said she had dreamt about me.
