We were singing on the houseboat. Someone out on the water sang the next line.
It was an old Malayalam song that only our friend Anju knew all the way through. She stopped, lost the line. From the dark water a woman's voice finished it.
The boatman switched off the light and moved us away from the bank. In the morning we asked him about it. He smiled and said, she sings it well.
