The Bells of Lake Svetloyar
Legend says a holy city sank into a small Russian lake to escape invaders. On still nights, pilgrims say they can hear its bells.
What was reported
Lake Svetloyar is a small, round, very deep lake in the forests east of Nizhny Novgorod. According to a legend first written down in the 18th century, the city of Kitezh, threatened by a Mongol army, sank beneath its waters rather than be captured, and lives on there, invisible.
For centuries, pilgrims have spent nights by the lake hoping to hear the city's church bells ringing from under the water, or to glimpse its domes reflected on the surface. Many say they have.
Explanations offered
Kitezh is a legend, often called the Russian Atlantis, and inspired an opera by Rimsky-Korsakov. Sounds over still water carry a long way, and bells from distant churches may explain some reports. Geologists have studied the lake's unusual round basin, but found no city.
