Skinwalker Ranch
A ranch in Utah's Uintah Basin became known for strange lights, odd animals and things no one could explain.
What was reported
In the 1990s, a family who had bought a ranch in north-eastern Utah described a string of strange events: lights and objects in the sky, unusually large animals, and equipment that stopped working. The surrounding area already had a long history of reported lights and local stories.
In 1996, businessman Robert Bigelow bought the ranch and set up a research group to study it. Later, part of a US government programme on unexplained phenomena funded work there. Since 2020 it has been the subject of a television series.
Explanations offered
Researchers who spent years at the ranch say they never captured clear evidence. Sceptics point out that many reports come from people with a commercial or personal interest in the story, and that remote ranches see plenty of ordinary lights and animals. Supporters say the number of witnesses is hard to dismiss.
