The Vortexes of Sedona
The red rocks around Sedona, Arizona, are said to hold swirling 'vortexes' of energy that people travel from around the world to feel.
What was reported
Sedona lies among striking red sandstone buttes and canyons in Arizona. From the 1980s, especially after a large New Age gathering there in 1987, it became known for 'vortexes': spots such as Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock and Airport Mesa where visitors say they feel energy, tingling or a deep calm.
Twisted juniper trees near these spots are often pointed to as evidence.
Explanations offered
Scientists have found no unusual magnetic or electrical activity at the vortex sites. Twisted junipers are common and linked to wind and growth. The feelings people describe may come from the dramatic landscape and from expectation. Vortex tourism is now a big part of Sedona's economy.
