The Santa Compaña
In Galicia, a silent procession of souls with candles walks the lanes at midnight, led by a living person who can't stop.
What was reported
The Santa Compaña, 'holy company', is a legend of Galicia and nearby parts of north-west Spain and Portugal. It's a procession of the souls of the dead, robed and carrying candles, that walks the lanes and woods at midnight, sometimes felt only as a cold wind and a smell of wax.
It's led by a living person carrying a cross and a pot of holy water, who can't stop walking until they hand the burden to someone else.
Explanations offered
Folklorists see it as part of Galicia's rich tradition of beliefs about death, mixing old local and Christian ideas. Protections include drawing a circle on the ground or lying face down until it passes. It's still a familiar story in rural Galicia.
