The Ghosts of the Queen Mary

PlacesLong Beach, California, USA · Moored in Long Beach since 1967Legend

The great liner Queen Mary, now a hotel in California, is said to carry ghosts from her decades at sea.

What was reported

The RMS Queen Mary crossed the Atlantic from 1936, carried troops during the Second World War as the 'Grey Ghost', and has been moored at Long Beach, California, as a hotel and attraction since 1967.

Staff and guests have reported ghosts including a crewman in the engine room near watertight Door 13, children's laughter by the old first-class swimming pool, and a woman in white in the Queen's Salon. One cabin was closed to guests for years because of reports.

Explanations offered

Old ships are full of creaks, echoes and shifting temperatures, which can feed such impressions. The ghost tours are a major attraction. No haunting has been shown to be more than experience and storytelling.
