The Quarouble Encounter
Late at night, a French worker went outside to see why his dog was barking, and found a dark craft on the railway line.
What was reported
On the night of 10 September 1954, Marius Dewilde, a metalworker living beside a railway line near the Belgian border, heard his dog barking. Outside, he said, he saw a dark shape on the tracks and two small figures in suits like divers, with large helmets.
When he moved towards them, a beam of light from the object froze him in place. The figures went back to the craft, which rose and flew away. Investigators later found marks on the wooden railway sleepers, as if something heavy had stood there.
Explanations offered
The case came during a wave of UFO reports across France that autumn. Sceptics suggest a hoax or a misinterpreted event, but no explanation has been confirmed. Dewilde stood by his account.
