Pluckley, England's Most Haunted Village
A small village in Kent was once named England's most haunted, with a dozen ghosts said to roam its lanes.
What was reported
Pluckley, a village in the Kent countryside, was listed in the 1989 Guinness Book of Records as the most haunted village in England, with around a dozen ghosts. They include a highwayman at Fright Corner, a Red Lady searching the churchyard for her baby's grave, a phantom coach and horses, and a schoolmaster.
The village became a magnet for ghost hunters, especially at Halloween, which some residents found a nuisance.
Explanations offered
Most of the stories can't be traced to records, and many seem to have been collected or embellished in the 20th century. Pluckley is otherwise known as the setting of the TV series The Darling Buds of May. Its ghosts are part of its charm.
