The Mexico City Eclipse Lights
During a total solar eclipse over Mexico City, people filming the sky captured a bright, still object near the darkened sun.
What was reported
On 11 July 1991, a total solar eclipse passed over Mexico City, and thousands of people filmed the sky with video cameras. Several recordings showed a bright, silvery object hanging in the sky away from the sun.
The videos were shown on Mexican television, and launched a wave of UFO interest in Mexico that lasted for years, with many more sightings reported.
Explanations offered
Astronomers pointed out that the planet Venus was bright and well placed in the sky during the eclipse, exactly where many of the videos showed the object. Most of the footage is consistent with Venus, though some enthusiasts insist that a few videos show something else.
