Memphré of Lake Memphremagog
A long lake between Quebec and Vermont has its own serpent, with a society that has collected sightings since the 1980s.
What was reported
Lake Memphremagog stretches about 50 km from Newport, Vermont, north into Quebec. Stories of a serpent-like creature in it go back to the 1800s.
The creature is called Memphré. In 1986 a local enthusiast founded a society to collect sightings, and it has logged well over 200 reports of a dark, humped animal.
Explanations offered
Suggested explanations include large fish such as lake sturgeon, otters, beavers, floating logs and boat wakes. No physical evidence has been found. Like Champ and Nessie, Memphré is a much-loved local mascot.
