The Kapre
In Philippine folklore, a giant sits in the branches of an old tree at night, smoking a huge cigar. You can smell the smoke.
What was reported
The kapre is a figure of Filipino folklore: a very tall, dark, hairy giant who lives in large old trees such as acacia, balete and mango, and is often seen smoking a big cigar. People walking at night say they smell tobacco smoke near such trees, or see a glowing ember high in the branches.
Kapres are usually said to be harmless, but they like to play tricks, making travellers lose their way in a familiar place. Some stories say a kapre may befriend a person and protect them.
Explanations offered
The kapre is a folklore figure, and many households still treat old trees with respect. Stories of being led in circles reflect how easy it is to get lost in the dark, and the 'smoke' may come from fires, plants or imagination.
