Indrid Cold
A salesman said a craft blocked the road, and a smiling man stepped out and spoke to him without moving his lips.
What was reported
On the evening of 2 November 1966, Woodrow Derenberger was driving home near Parkersburg when, he said, a dark object like an old lamp chimney landed in front of his truck. A man with a broad smile and a dark coat walked over and spoke to him telepathically, calling himself Indrid Cold and saying he meant no harm.
Derenberger went to the police and later said he had met Cold many times and visited his planet, Lanulos. His story came during the same months as the Mothman reports nearby.
Explanations offered
Two other people reported seeing something that night, but no one else saw the man. Derenberger's claims grew over the years, which made many people doubt the first story. The 'grinning man' became a fixture of later folklore.
