The Hessdalen Lights
In a quiet Norwegian valley, bright lights drift above the hills, sometimes for over an hour.
What was reported
Between 1981 and 1984, residents of the Hessdalen valley reported lights several times a week: white or yellow balls hanging above the ground, moving slowly, then racing away. The reports drew enough attention that researchers began studying the valley in 1983.
Lights are still seen, though less often. An automatic measuring station has watched the valley since 1998, making this one of the few unexplained lights studied with scientific instruments.
Explanations offered
Researchers have proposed ideas such as glowing dust or gas linked to the valley's rocks and minerals, but none has been proven. Because the lights have been photographed and measured many times, few doubt that something is there.
