The Oracle Room of Ħal Saflieni

Voices & soundsĦal Saflieni Hypogeum, Paola, Malta · Carved about 5,000 years agoPartly explained

In an underground temple carved 5,000 years ago, a man's deep voice echoes through the whole complex, as if the rock itself were singing.

What was reported

The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum in Malta is a prehistoric underground complex carved into the rock on three levels, used as a sanctuary and burial site around 5,000 years ago. It was found by accident in 1902, when workers digging cisterns for new houses broke into it. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In one small chamber, known as the Oracle Room, a low male voice resonates strongly, and the sound seems to fill the rooms around it. Visitors have long described the effect as eerie.

Explanations offered

Acoustics studies have measured strong resonances in the chamber at low frequencies around 110 Hz, in the range of a deep male voice. Whether the builders shaped it deliberately for sound is debated. Claims that the frequency has special effects on the mind are not supported by solid evidence.
