The Gwyllgi, the Dog of Darkness
On lonely Welsh roads at night, travellers feared the Gwyllgi, a huge black dog with burning eyes.
What was reported
The Gwyllgi, 'dog of darkness', is a phantom black dog of Welsh folklore, said to appear on lonely roads and lanes at night. It's described as a huge mastiff with blazing red eyes, sometimes seen padding silently beside travellers.
Meeting it was often taken as an omen of death or misfortune.
Explanations offered
It belongs to the wider British tradition of phantom black dogs, like Black Shuck in East Anglia and the Barghest in Yorkshire. Folklorists see such dogs as guardians of thresholds and warnings about travelling alone at night; stray dogs, shadows and fear may lie behind sightings.
