The Florence Stadium Sighting
During a football match in Florence, the players stopped and the crowd fell silent as shining objects crossed the sky, and silver threads drifted down.
What was reported
On the afternoon of 27 October 1954, about 10,000 people were watching a football match between Fiorentina and Pistoiese at the stadium in Florence when, witnesses said, cigar-shaped objects moved quickly across the sky and stopped over the stadium. The game halted as players and spectators stared upward.
Then fine, shiny threads began to fall from the sky, settling on the stadium and the city, and dissolving when touched. Similar sightings and 'angel hair' were reported across Italy and France that autumn.
Explanations offered
The threads may have been silk from migrating spiders, which travel on long strands carried by the wind, sometimes in huge numbers. The objects have been explained as balloons or reflections, but no explanation is agreed. Players at the match spoke about it for the rest of their lives.
