El Enladrillado
High in the Chilean Andes lies a flat plateau of huge stone blocks, fitted together so neatly that people call it a landing strip.
What was reported
El Enladrillado, 'the bricked place', is a plateau about 2,200 metres up in the Andes of the Maule Region. Its surface is made of more than 200 large stone blocks with flat tops and straight edges, fitted together like paving.
It is one of the most popular stops on Chile's 'UFO trail' around San Clemente, and stories say it was built as a landing strip for craft from beyond Earth, or as an ancient altar.
Explanations offered
Geologists explain it as volcanic rock that cracked into regular blocks as it cooled, a natural process that also creates formations like the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. Weather has since smoothed the surface.
