The Dragon of Lake Chini
A Malaysian lake is said to hide a sunken ancient city, guarded by a dragon called Seri Gumum.
What was reported
Chini Lake, in Pahang, is a chain of twelve connected lakes surrounded by forest and home to the Orang Asli Jakun people. Local legend says a naga, or dragon, called Seri Gumum lives in its depths.
Another story tells of an ancient walled city beneath the water, sometimes linked to the Khmer empire. Divers and researchers have looked into the claims.
Explanations offered
No sunken city has been confirmed; some surveys reported possible stone structures, while others found only natural features. The lake has suffered from nearby logging and mining, and its famous lotus blooms have declined, prompting conservation efforts.
