The Gate of Aramu Muru
Near Lake Titicaca, a giant doorway carved into a rock face leads nowhere. Legend says it was once a gateway to another world.
What was reported
At Hayu Marka, near Lake Titicaca in southern Peru, a large doorway shape about 7 metres high and wide is carved into a natural wall of red rock. In its centre is a smaller, human-sized alcove.
A local legend tells of an Inca priest, Aramu Muru, who fled the Spanish with a sacred golden disc and passed through the door, never to return. In recent decades, it has become known as a 'stargate' among spiritual tourists.
Explanations offered
Archaeologists see it as a carved shrine, possibly unfinished, made by local Andean peoples who often shaped natural rock into sacred places. There is no evidence of anything behind the carving. The legend of the priest is not recorded in early sources.
