The Sky Trumpets
In 2011, videos began spreading of deep, groaning trumpet sounds coming from the sky above cities.
What was reported
In August 2011, a video filmed in Kyiv showed a city street while a loud, metallic, groaning sound seemed to come from the sky. Over the following years, hundreds of similar videos were posted from Canada, the United States, Europe and elsewhere.
People called them 'apocalyptic sounds' or 'sky trumpets', and some saw them as a sign of the end of the world.
Explanations offered
Many of the videos were shown to be edited, with sound effects taken from films added over ordinary footage. Some real recordings have been traced to trains, construction work, industrial machinery and wind through structures. A few remain unexplained.
